PUBLIC OUTREACH

Without a doubt, public outreach is one of the most important aspects of any significant public works project. Since the inception of the Odor Abatement Program , the project team has coordinated several efforts to share ideas with the public stakeholders, and to get their valuable input. Since the fall of 2000, seven (7) meetings have been held with the public stakeholders to discuss the proposed project. Public stakeholders that have been involved thus far represent several communities in Montgomery County, Maryland, and Loudoun and Fairfax Counties, Virginia. Public stakeholder groups involved at these "open forum" meetings includes the Potomac Conservancy , the American Canoe Association , the Canoe Cruisers Association , the Cabin John Community , the Glen Echo Community , the Brookmont Community , the Countryside Community , and the Great Falls Citizen's Association. This website was created to provide the interested public parties with detailed information on the Odor Abatement Program for the Potomac Interceptor (PI), and to update these groups on the progress of the project. Upcoming public meetings will be identified on this page of the project website, while other information regarding the Odor Abatement Program will be updated on their respective web pages.

Please click on the links below to view the Powerpoint presentations that were given at recent public meetings. The first presentation (dated December 5, 2000) provides a good overview of the Odor Abatement Program. The second presentation (dated March 22, 2001) responds to many of the issues brought up at the previous public meeting on December 5, 2001. The third presentation (dated April 1, 2008)updates the community on the project status, issues delaying the work and efforts to move forward. The first two presentations will provide some general background of the efforts completed to date. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view these files.

The project team has completed the Environmental Assessment (EA) related to parts of the Long-Term Odor Control Program in the National Park Service lands. In early 2002, the EA was reviewed by the National Park Service (C&O Canal and GWMP), and the Maryland and District of Columbia Historic Preservation Offices. The EA document was submitted for public comments in mid-late Spring 2002. A FONSI has been issued for the project. Please send any questions you may have to the email link below. Questions will be responded to in a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page that will soon be added to the website. Questions similar in nature will be responded to with one answer on the FAQs page. Thank you for your interest and support of this important public project!
